Water failure in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture on July 12, 2004
The water supply was cut-off in the large area of Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture early morning of July 12, 2004 due to the water pipe rupture.
No inconvenience will be caused to the customers.
For your information the details of the water failure, its impact to DISCO and our response to maintain production are reported as follows;
Scale of the accident and affected area
According to the newspapers, a water pipe under repair was ruptured and the water gushed as high as 15 meters from the ground at 4-chome, Aga-Minami, Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture early morning of July 12, 2004, and the authorities made an emergency decision to temporarily cut-off water supply in the area.
In this consequence, the water supply was not available at approximately 29000 households in the east part of Kure City (where our Kure Plant is located) and the neighboring area.
Water supply is expected to resume in all the affected areas within July 13.
Impact to DISCO and our response
The operation was temporarily suspended right after the water supply was cut-off early morning of July 12 at Kure Plant(our production base for precision diamond blades). We decided to suspend the operation at Kure Plant all day, as water supply was not expected to resume within July 12. As soon as the operation was suspended at Kure Plant, Kuwabata Plant started alternate production, which enabled normal supply of precision diamond blades without any interruption.
Recovery to normal operation
The water supply resumed early morning of July 13 and our Kure Plant has been back to normal operation the same day.
There has been neither delay in production nor impact to our facility.
Future Responses
DISCO has a risk management system including maintaining an appropriate stock and setting up alternate production system in order to avoid any risk to our production operations. From our experience with this water failure, we will further reinforce our response system to accidents and disasters.
Our situation is as stated above. We would like to express our heartfelt sympathies to those who were affected by the water
failure by the accident.
