
Typhoon No. 23 moving up the Japanese archipelago on October 20, 2004
Extremely large-scale and powerful Typhoon No. 23 is located at 90 km south-southeast offshore of Cape Toi, Miyazaki prefecture at 8:00 a.m. October 20, 2004. It is presently moving toward northeast at a speed of 45 km/hour, taking southern part of Kyushu in its storm zone with a strong wind of over 25 m/second. It is expected to hit southern coast of Shikoku and then make landfall at Kii Peninsula in the evening.
Our response to the typhoon is reported below for your information.
Details of Typhoon No. 23
According to Japan Meteorological Agency, the typhoon has an atmospheric pressure of 950 hectopascals and the maximum wind speed of 40 m/second at its center. Within 220 km circuit from the eye of the typhoon is in the storm zone, and within 750 km circuit is in the strong wind zone with wind speed over 15 m/second. At present, all Kyushu and Shikoku, as well as large part of Western Japan have entered into the strong wind zone and are advised to be on full alert.
Impact to DISCO and our response
As the typhoon approached, Kure-City, Hiroshima, where our plants are located, is strengthening precautions against it today (October 20) including temporary closure of the elementary and junior high schools.
DISCO decided to temporarily close Kure Plant, Kuwabata Plant and Nagatani Plant all day today in order to ensure safety
of the employees.
No inconvenience or delay in supply will be caused to the customers, as all the shipment of equipment and precision diamond blades for today has been already taken care of yesterday and today's production will be covered by a make-up production later.
